On the 6th January we decided to take Chico & Faya to Bore Strand for a walk withnear disatorous consequences for Chico. When running to Elisabeth for a treat Chico suddenly yelped in pain and stopped holding his front right leg out an an angle. We knew it was bad as he had to be carried off the beach and Chico is not normally happy to be picked up so carrying him for a kilometer gave us a clear message how serious it was. At first we thought it was broken but the vet told us it was not broken. However, we saw no improvement and so took him back. The vet gave him a new jab and said if there was no improvement the next day then it was more than seriously sprained. There was no improvement.
On the 14th we returned to the vet and got the news that he had ruptured the ligaments round his corpus bones (wrist) and the dramatic recommendation to put him down. We were very sad and shocked as we had read that severe corpus damage was fixed in most dogs via pinning. However, we had decided that was what must be done, but decided to get a second opinion. Luckily the second opinion was much better and his old vet back on Karmøy said that it was fairly common with good success rates so we went for it. On the sixteenth he had his operation where they have pinned his wrist so the bone will fuse and whilst he will never be as good as new he certainly has a good chance of recovering the majority of his movement. Better than the alternative we hope. Anyway see the dramatic X-rays of his foot below.
